How to make your cat bury their poop and pee

When I got my little Leila at 8 weeks old she use to always bury her poop and pee whenever she used the little tray. Eventually after about 6 months she would sometimes do a poop and not even bother trying to bury her business. Of course this would stink the house out when I got home. I put up with it and assumed that she would eventually grow out of her bad habit. On the contrary the habit got worse and it came to the point where she would never bury it especially when I started letting her outside.

How I solved the problem:

1. I picked Leila up and took her to where her uncovered poop and pee was.

2. I would let her sniff it and then I would bury it with a litter scoop in front of her.

3. I did this a few times in the morning when I let her out of the house.

4. When I got home I noticed that her litter was being buried. Whenever I saw this I praised her and gave her a pat.

5. At the start some days she didn’t bury her poop but eventually she got into the habit of burying regularly.

This is my way of getting a cat to bury their poop and pee. I haven’t seen any other solutions on the net so give it a go and let me know how it goes.

Dagger is a male American shorthair, and Sciandubh is a female Irish tabby who thinks Dagger is HERS even though he raised her. She IS a bit of a poser when it comes to a camera, but I think in the last pic, they both said “Cheese!”

This is Frederick. I don’t know how old he is as I found him abandoned in a park. He loves playing soccer with his ping pong ball and taking a bath.

This is Blondie. He is part Maine Coon and domestic short hair. He is about 8 months old, still a kitten. In the first and second picture he is next to his older brother Ginger.

Blondie loves lying by the fire place in winter and enjoys going for a swim in the pool in summer.
